THE BRIEF:
Since opening in 2021, Kong has established itself as one of the trendiest hospitality venues in Glasgow.
We’ve been with them every step of the way so far, ensuring the interior ambience their guests have become accustomed to is complemented by our vibrant and meticulously maintained plant displays. We were delighted to be approached for their latest venture as they expand their offering with an all-year-round Roof Garden.
The brief was clear: design a jungle-themed escape from the city that is in keeping with Kong’s sophisticated aesthetic, and is versatile enough to be enjoyed in every season. To bring this vision to life, we joined forces with Surface ID, a renowned design studio specializing in commercial interior design for leisure, hospitality, and events.
THE SOLUTION:
To reach the Roof Garden, guests are led through a staircase and hallway with a lush green ceiling overhead. This was created using over 400 plants, each strategically placed to seamlessly integrate with emergency lighting and sprinklers.
Between floors, an arrangement of artificial trails and mixed leafy vines were intertwined with fairy lights and suspended from the ceiling to create a breath-taking ‘waterfall’ effect.
In the corridor recess, a variety of tropical foliage was fixed to the back wall of the alcove to create an exciting selfie background. This was installed around ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ neon signage encouraging visitors to capture and share their experiences at the Roof Bar.
Above the bar itself, we installed a green wall with more tropical foliage, which was later finished with a custom ‘Roof Garden’ neon display.
Moving outside, a mixture of live and artificial planting wraps around the terrace. This includes planting built into the booth seating and ivy which spills out of pots hooked onto the perimeter mesh.
Finally, terracotta and grey stone planters with a natural finish were nestled in groups throughout the terrace, adding texture, colour, and height variation to the overall design.
Our skilled Maintenance Technicians will continue to nurture the Roof Garden, visiting at optimal intervals to ensure it remains a flourishing retreat.
THE RESULTS:
Having visited the roof garden as a team on its opening weekend, we were blown away by the finished result. It was hard to believe we were still in Glasgow, with only the rain to remind us as we marvelled at the oasis we had helped to bring to life.
