PROJECTS » BDP, Glasgow

THE BRIEF:

BDP (Building Design Partnership), based in Glasgow, is a renowned multidisciplinary design studio situated within the iconic Grosvenor Building on Gordon Street. As one of the leading architectural practices in the UK, BDP is dedicated to creating thoughtful, high-quality, and sustainable design solutions that enrich the built environment and elevate the human experience.

The Grosvenor Building itself carries significant architectural and historical importance. Designed by Alexander “Greek” Thomson, one of Glasgow’s most celebrated Victorian architects, alongside his brother George, the building first opened its doors in 1861 as a commercial warehouse.

Its distinctive classical façade and elegant proportions exemplify Thomson’s unique style, blending ancient Greek inspiration with modern innovation. Recognising its cultural and architectural value, the Grosvenor Building was granted Category A-listed status in 1988, cementing its place as one of Glasgow’s treasured landmarks.

When BDP approached Benholm, their vision was to enhance the new studio environment by introducing elements of biophilic design, a design philosophy that connects people more closely with nature. Our objective was to enrich the workspace through the careful integration of natural textures, improved acoustics, and balanced lighting.

THE SOLUTION:

Situated in the dense heart of Glasgow’s urban grid, the interior design of BDP’s studio required a thoughtful approach to bring warmth, softness, and a sense of nature into the space. Given the city-centre location, planting was always destined to play a pivotal role in shaping the studio’s character and atmosphere to truly elevate the human experience.

To achieve this, we collaborated closely with BDP, to create a vibrant, living interior. The planting strategy was carefully developed around the building’s central lightwell, a defining architectural feature that floods the space with natural light.

The plants were carefully positioned at eye-level to ensure the greenery remains constantly visible throughout the workspace, no matter where you stand. Views through the lightwell create a dynamic connection between work zones, while the lush foliage enhances both the aesthetic and the sense of wellbeing, bringing life to what might otherwise have been a hard, urban interior.

Plants incorporated into the space included:

  • Kentia Palm – a tall plant with arching, feathery fronds which truly elevates the look and feel of the space

  • Monstera deliciosa (Swiss Cheese Plant) – the large leaves with natural splits and holes add drama while softening the more industrial backdrop

  • Aglaonema Maria –  backdrop easy to care for and resilient with glossy, marble-like leaves, this plant adds intrigue with its unique patterns
  • Fiddle-leaf fig – a true favourite in modern interiors, this plant always makes a bold statement

THE RESULTS:

BDP’s reimagining of the Grosvenor Building’s interior presents a striking contrast between heritage and futurism. Stepping inside, visitors are immediately immersed in a light-filled, contemporary environment where biophilia and sleek architectural elements converge. The greenery, cascading around the dome interacts beautifully with the reflective surfaces and exposed structure, creating an atmosphere that feels simultaneously organic and futuristic.

The plants positioned in and around the central lightwell and framing the glass elevators, bring a sense of movement and vitality to the heart of the studio. As daylight filters through the dome, it dances across leaves and glass, producing a living, ever-changing backdrop. The result is a workspace that feels almost biotech in spirit, a seamless fusion of nature, light, and technology.

We were delighted to work on such a prestigious building which reflects the social and architectural evolution of the city. With a clear vision in mind, we brought the space to life and incorporated plants which can tolerate low-light and purify the air.
