PROJECTS » Rabbie’s Tours, Edinburgh
THE BRIEF:
Abertay University set out to revitalise the Bernard King Library’s ground floor, creating an inclusive and dynamic space that would become the heart of campus life.
The library plays a central role in Abertay University’s reputation as a leading educational institution. The refurbishment supports the university’s efforts to maintain its high standards, exemplified by its achievement as the top modern university in Scotland for student satisfaction in the 2024 National Student Survey (NSS)—the sector’s key measure on student satisfaction.
The vision, developed in collaboration with Threesixty Architecture, sought to establish a calming and textured environment inspired by natural forms. Key areas of focus included “The Drum,” a multifunctional space for study, meetings, and events; a pop-up zone for campaigns and charity events; and a private waiting area offering comfort and privacy.
The design aimed to incorporate organic elements to foster wellbeing, mindfulness, and social interaction, while ensuring the space reflected the university’s values of sustainability and innovation. A cohesive material palette of natural, durable textures was selected to support these goals.
THE SOLUTION:
Benholm Group played a crucial role in bringing this biophilic vision to life, supplying, installing, and maintaining bespoke plant displays that complement the library’s redesigned interiors.
The Drum Area: Central to the space is “The Drum,” which features integrated planters filled with lush, vibrant greenery. The arrangement of plants creates soft, organic forms that contrast with the modern, clean lines of the surrounding architecture. The terracotta-style planters add warmth and texture, harmonising with the wooden finishes of the furniture and ceilings.
Study and Collaboration Zones: In areas designed for both individual work and group discussions, planters were integrated into the furniture. Green-tiled planters host carefully chosen plant species with a variety of leaf shapes and sizes, creating a sense of intimacy while maintaining an open and airy feel. This planting style contributes to the natural flow of the space, encouraging both productivity and relaxation.
Private Waiting Area: For the secluded waiting zone, tall plants such as palms and dracaenas were introduced, providing privacy while maintaining a connection to the rest of the library. The greenery softens the glass-enclosed space, creating a welcoming and tranquil atmosphere for users seeking support services.
Throughout the library, hanging plants and planters incorporated into shelving add vertical dimension and reinforce the overall theme of natural textures and organic forms.
THE RESULTS:
The upgraded Bernard King Library has become a vibrant and inclusive hub for students, staff, and visitors. The integration of natural elements enhances the aesthetic appeal of the space while aligning with the university’s focus on sustainability and wellbeing.
The design, achieved through a combination of carefully curated planting styles and sustainable materials, fosters a sense of calm and creativity. It supports the multifunctional nature of the library, providing spaces that are equally suited to individual study, group collaboration, and casual socialising.
By incorporating greenery into every part of the design, the library achieves a harmonious balance of functionality and mindfulness. The planting not only elevates the visual experience but also contributes to the library’s role as a central feature of campus life.
This latest project transforms the library ground floor as a new vibrant space for our Student's Association. The planting changes the environment to a welcoming and relaxing space for all our students and staff. Great result and a positive start to 2025.
