THE BRIEF:

In August 2023, Benholm Group was approached to deliver an impressive green feature for BAE Systems’ new Applied Shipbuilding Academy at the Scotstoun shipyard in Glasgow. This state-of-the-art, £12 million facility, designed to nurture the shipbuilding workforce of the future, required an exterior living wall to enhance its modern design. The project, led by Arch Henderson—an engineering and architectural firm with over 100 years of experience—demanded precision, creativity, and environmental sustainability.

The living wall needed to cover a significant portion of the exterior, making it our largest living wall project to date. BAE Systems requested a design that would align with the Academy’s modern aesthetic and provide space for branding. The project had to be executed efficiently, adhering to strict security protocols and a tight installation deadline.

THE SOLUTION:

Working closely with Arch Henderson, we proposed a modular living wall system that not only met the design and sustainability brief but also incorporated practical features such as an automatic irrigation system. The design process was meticulous; we created a custom Excel spreadsheet outlining every module’s placement to ensure that the pattern was perfect and that space was left for branding.

To ensure the plants would thrive, we used a vertical stacked modular ‘box’ system made from 100% recycled materials. Each module featured an integrated water reservoir, providing consistent hydration and reducing maintenance. The irrigation system was connected to an existing mains pressure tap, allowing for regular watering.

We pre-planted all the boxes at our facility, ensuring the plants were established before they were transported to the site. The installation process took place over four days, during which our team worked alongside BAE Systems, adhering to their strict security protocols. Vertical support straps were strategically placed to secure the living wall to the existing framework.

THE RESULTS:

The result was a stunning, eco-friendly living wall that transformed the exterior of the Applied Shipbuilding Academy. The vibrant wall not only enhanced the visual appeal of the building but also reinforced the Academy’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. Our largest living wall installation to date, it stands as a symbol of modern shipbuilding’s future.

The Applied Shipbuilding Academy is now a key training facility for BAE Systems, catering to over 4,500 employees and serving as a lifelong learning hub. The living wall has contributed to the facility’s cutting-edge image, aligning perfectly with its focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This project demonstrates Benholm Group’s ability to deliver large-scale, high-quality green installations that combine aesthetics with functionality, all within tight timeframes and complex working environments.

By adding plants to your workplace, you can achieve a complete transformation of your premises in just an hour or two.
